Monday morning saw us leave Eureka, CA and drive north along the Pacific Coast Highway to Oregon. Once we crossed the State line we continued along Highway 101, here known as the Oregon Coast Highway for 364 miles. The weather was mixed as we headed to Port Orford our first stopover. But we did get to see some beautiful coastal views.
Near Port Orford is Cape Blanco Lighthouse at Oregon’s westernmost point.
There had been some forest fires near Port Orford (about five miles away) but fortunately they were under control and almost out according to the owner of our motel. He was happy that rain was coming. We saw some of the devastation caused by the fires. We also passed one of the fire camps which are set up for volunteers and fire-fighting supporters to rest, eat and sleep while the fires burn.
Our next stop was in the small town of Yachats (pronounced ya-hots). Our hotel was right at the coast and we were able to view the waves crashing on to the shore as well as beautiful sunsets.
We went to Cape Perpetua, close to Yachats, had a picnic lunch and walked a trail through moss-laden, old growth forest down to the beach.
We left Yachats on Friday morning and headed north. The day started out very pleasant weather-wise and we continued to enjoy the coastal scenery. We stopped for lunch in Tillamook Creamery, famous throughout the country for its award winning cheese and ice cream.
At this stage the weather had disimproved and by the time we reached Cannon Beach, home to Haystack Rock, the third-tallest sea stack in the world, it was rather wet and dull so unfortunately we didn’t see it at its best.
Continuing through the town, we had to stop as some deer decided to cross in front of us.
We completed the Oregon coastal drive as we continued north and crossed the spectacular Astoria-Megler Bridge to enter Washington State. This bridge is over four miles long, it spans the mouth of the Columbia River and is the second-longest of its type in the world.
Fabulous sunset
