San Francisco is built on 43 hills and surrounded by water on three sides. It has an incredible number of sights and we had just 4 days to fit as much as possible in. We started our time in the city by having drinks in the bar on the 46th floor of the Hilton - just to get an overview of the city skyline.
The next morning we did a tour of Downtown San Francisco.
It has served as a harbour fortification, military detention centre and a maximum-security federal, penitentiary. Among the most notorious prisoners there were Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly and Robert "Birdman" Stroud. The tour was excellent with an audio tour with the voices of actual
prisoners and prison guards.
On our third day we took San Francisco 's famous cable cars from Union Square up to Russian Hill
and back down again. It was quite an experience, standing on the side as we chugged up and down the hills.
Then it was time to do a final bit of retail therapy, relax and enjoy our final hours of a wonderful trip.
